This simple recipe for tarka dal is now my go-to favourite, mainly since I discovered Sapna Ginger & Garlic paste.
Obviously this would normally be made with dried lentils, but since discovering how creamy the cannellini beans become, this is my favourite recipe for daal.
Ingredients

- 1 tablespoon ghee
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Good pinch of freshly ground black pepper
- 1 medium onion, very finely chopped
- ยฝ teaspoon salt
- ยฝ teaspoon turmeric powder
- ยฝ teaspoon Taste Sensation Piri Piri seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 dried cassia leaf
- 2 tablespoons Sapana Ginger and Garlic Paste
- 3 tomatoes, peeled and chopped
- 1 x can Cannellini beans, rinsed and drained
Method
- Add the ghee and oil to a pan with a good pinch of black pepper
- Stir in the onions and fry for five minutes until slightly coloured
- Add all of the spices and dry ingredients and stir fry for one minute
- Mix in the ginger and garlic paste and fry for a minute until well mixed
- Pour in the beans and tomatoes and combine well
- Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring regularly and added a little water if the mixture starts to congeal
Serving suggestions
Serve with chopped fresh coriander
Chef's notes
If you prefer a smooth tarka dal then run the dal through the blender before mixing in the tarka.
This freezes well.
