I always used to wash meat until I read this http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/homehygiene/Pages/Foodhygiene.aspx Scroll down to the section about hand washing --JuliaBalbilla 16:21, 7 July 2012 (BST)
Makes sense. Old habits though :-( --Jerry, aka Chef 16:32, 7 July 2012 (BST)
Thinking more about this, I don't wash a bird for hygiene reasons but for freshness. I feel that if it's been sitting sealed in a bag for a while, it will be nicer if it's rinsed out. I am careful to clear up afterwards and it's one of the few times I might use an anti-bacterial spray. Still a good point of yours though. --Jerry, aka Chef 16:56, 7 July 2012 (BST)
I agree with you re freshness and I try to encourage people in this house to unwrap meat as soon they get home, but fighting a losing battle. Same thing with fruit and veg. I have been cleaning out fridge number one this afternoon and the amount of stuff I have had to bin because people don't remove things from plastic packaging straight away. I suppose a happy medium with a chicken is to plonk it in a bowl and gently pour cold water over it. --JuliaBalbilla 18:57, 7 July 2012 (BST)
