A modern Bamix stick blender with attachments

The stick blender is a kitchen appliance used to blend ingredients or purée food in the container in which they are being prepared. They are also known as immersion blenders, wand blenders, hand blenders, Bermixers (after the brand name of professional models made by Dito-Electrolux), or boat motors (a nickname for larger commercial-grade immersion blenders, popularized by Emeril Lagasse and Alton Brown). They may be used for pureeing soups and emulsifying sauces. Some can be used while a pan is on the stove. Immersion blenders are distinguished from blenders and food processors that require food be placed in a special vessel for processing. They are distinguished from hand mixers which do not chop the food as it is blended.

The immersion blender was invented in Switzerland by Roger Perrinjaquet, who patented the idea in 1950. He called the new appliance "bamix", an abbreviation of the French "battre et mixer" (beat and mix) and Bamix stick blenders are still produced today in Switzerland.

Models for home use usually ten to twelve inches tall but models are available for professional kitchens can be up to two feet long.

My current stick blender

I'm now using a Homgeek Hand Blender and have been very pleased with it, especially with all the attachments. My previous two Moulinex blenders both seized at the blade end. The moving parts on this one can be removed and washed separately, even left to soak. For around £38, you can't beat it. Homgeek Hand Blender - Amazon UK
