Milleens cheese

Milleens is a soft, washed-rind farmhouse cheese made from Friesian cows’ milk by the Steele family on the Beara peninsula in Co. Cork. It is the oldest Irish farmhouse cheese.

The complex and delicate cheese has a sweet floral flavour and firm to creamy texture. It has an orangey-pink rind and it is allowed to mature for four to ten weeks, but will continue to ripen and soften for up to three months after being made. It is available in 1.5 kg and 200 g rounds, the small ones being called 'dotes'.

In 1997, Milleens was the winner of the British Cheese Awards.
