About Greek recipes

Greek cuisine (Greek: Ελληνική Κουζίνα) is the traditional cuisine of Greece, a typical Mediterranean cuisine, sharing characteristics with the cuisines of Italy, the Balkans, Anatolia, and the Middle East. Contemporary Greek cookery makes wide use of olive oil, vegetables and herbs, grains and bread, wine, fish, and various meats, including poultry and rabbit.

Typical ingredients in Greek cuisine are lamb and pork, olives, cheese, aubergine, courgettes, and yoghurt. The desserts are dominated by nuts and honey. Some dishes use phyllo pastry.

ΠΟΠ (POP) ingredients

ΠΟΠ (POP) stands for ‘Προστατευόμενη Ονομασία Προέλευσης’ (Prostateuomeni Onomasia Proeleusis) which in the UK we know as 'Protected Designation of Origin' (PDO). Under the EU agricultural product quality policy, this "covers agricultural products and foodstuffs which are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognised know-how". The following Greek and Cypriot ingredients are those which are registered as ΠΟΠ (POP).

Under the EU agricultural product quality policy, this "covers agricultural products and foodstuffs closely linked to the geographical area. At least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation takes place in the area." The following Greek and Cypriot ingredients are those which are registered as ΠΓΕ (PGE).

ΕΠΙΠ (EPIP) stands for ‘Εγγυημένα Παραδοσιακά Ιδιότυπα Προϊόντα’ (Eggyimena Paradosiaka Idiotypa Proionta) which in the UK is known as 'Traditional Speciality Guaranteed’ (TSG). It "highlights traditional character, either in the composition or means of production". Currently, there are no Greek and Cypriot ingredients which are registered as ΕΠΙΠ (EPIP).
