Pera mantovana

IGP Pera mantovana is an Italian pear obtained from the varieties William, Max Red Bartlett, Conference, Decana del Comizio, Abate Fetel and Kaiser grown on appropriate land using non-intensive methods

Geographical area: The area of production comprises the whole of the Sabbioneta municipalities: Commessaggio, Viadana, Pomponesco, Dosolo, Gazzuolo, Suzzara, Borgoforte, Motteggiana, Bagnolo San Vito, Virgilio, Sustinente, Gonzaga, Pegögnaga, Moglia, S. Benedetto Po, Quistello, Quingentole, S. Giacomo delle Segnate, S. Giovanni del Dosso, Schivenoglia, Pieve di Coriano, Revere, Ostiglia, Serravalle a Po, Villa Poma, Poggio Rusco, Magnacavallo, Borgofranco sul Po, Carbonara di Po, Sermide and Felónica - a continuous area of the province of Mantua

Proof of origin: The area traditionally known as the Oltrepò mantovano provides some of the oldest and most interesting evidence of the growing of quality pears. For many centuries the pear tree was valuable but usually kept only in arbours in the courtyards of noble houses. During this century, improved structures for marketing, transport and conservation have given the growing of pears a major boost, so greatly improving quantity and quality.

Method of production: The planting conditions, method of cultivation, pruning systems and harvesting of the pear trees producing 'mantovano' pears are traditional in the area and provide the product with its special traditional quality features. The suitability of these areas for the production of pears has been demonstrated by many scientific studies, which are attached to the specification. Virtually all the soil is "ochrepts pianeggianti" (plains), areas near the Po which have long been protected from flooding by artificial dikes. They are highly fertile.

Link: There is a close link between the Oltrepò mantovano area and the special features of pears grown there. In that area, cultivation requires no forcing, a technological innovation which has become available to agriculture in recent years, but depends simply on its natural conditions, which differ significantly from those of neighbouring areas.
