Maçã da Cova da Beira

IGP Maçã da Cova da Beira is a Portuguese apple originating from various varieties traditionally cultivated in the area known as Cova da Beira.

Geographical area: All the parishes of Fundão, Covilhã, Manteigas and Belmonte.

Evidence: Grown in the region, it is recognised nationally and internationally as an apple with specific characteristics provided by the edaphological-climatic conditions of Cova da Beira.

Method of production: From apple-trees of the regional varieties Golden Delicious, Red Delicious and Jersey Mac in sedimentary soils which are deep and well drained.

Link: The organoleptic characteristics of the apple reflect the climatic conditions, in the valley area, particularly of the Zêzere river.

Gastronomy: IGP Maçã da Cova da Beira can be stored for several months at a temperature of between 2°C and 4°C. They can be eaten as a table fruit used as an ingredient for puddings and cakes used to make fruit juice.
