Cereja de São Julião-Portalegre

DOP Cereja de São Julião-Portalegre is a Portuguese cherry, which is black in colour, is a very resistant and very flavourful variety.

Geographical area: Restricted to all the subdistricts of Marvão, Castelo de Vide and Portalegre.

Evidence: Established through use, particularly due to the extensive acceptance and reputation which the cherry has gained on the national market

Method of production: This cherry is the result of crossbreeding between the sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) and that occurring in the area of Portalegre.

Link: The cherry is perfectly suited to the different ecosystems occurring in this area of north-east Alentejo, even with the edaphological-climatic variations.

Gastronomy: DOP Cereja de São Julião-Portalegre cherries must be kept in a cool, dry place. They are usually eaten fresh after meals or as a snack but they are also used in recipes for desserts and jams.
