Montsec cheese

Benabarre is an artisan pasteurised goats’ milk cheese from the place of the same name at the foot of the Pyrenees in the province of Huesca. The area is surrounded by Montsec and the Sierra de Guara and the goats live on berries, acorns and natural herbs that grow in the Pre-Pyrenees which give a special flavour to the milk.

The cellar matured cheese can vary according to the season. In autumn and winter, it has a higher fat content whereas the rind is less mouldy summer and autumn.

Benabarre come in four varieties:

Queso Benabarre has a mouldy rind and a mild flavour

Queso Romero has a slightly mouldy rind, which is covered in rosemary and has a creamy texture

Queso Pirineos has a semi-hard texture

Queso Montsec is soft with a creamy texture
