| Pour the water into a medium saucepan, add the chopped [[Onion|onion]], [[Ginger|ginger]], [[Turmeric|turmeric]] and [[Cumin seeds|cumin seeds]] then add the [[Tomatoes|tomatoes]] and bring to the [[Boil|boil]].&lt;br /&gt;
| Put the [[Lentils|lentils]] into a [[Sieve|sieve]], rinse with cold water, drain and then add to the saucepan with plenty of [[Salt|salt]] and [[Pepper|pepper]]. &lt;br /&gt;
| Bring back to the [[Boil|boil]] then [[Simmer|simmer]] for about 30 minutes, stirring from time to time until the [[Lentils|lentils]] are soft.&lt;br /&gt;
| About 10 minutes before you are ready to serve, make the topping by heating the [[Oil|oil]] in a [[Frying pan|frying pan]], add the [[Onions|onions]] and [[Fry|fry]] gently for 5 minutes until softened. &lt;br /&gt;
