These Jamaican 'cakes' are also known as journey cakes because they are ideal as a travelling snack.

Ingredients

  • 500 g plain flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 30 g butter

  • Water
  • Oil for deep frying

Method

  1. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl.
  2. Mix in the butter and enough water to make a stiff dough.
  3. Shape them into 5 cm balls and deep fry them in moderately hot oil until they are brown.

Serving suggestions

Serve with butter for breakfast, or as an accompaniment to fish or meat.
