This is a recipe to make English muffins that are similar to crumpets. It's not a recipe for those horrid gooey sweet things!

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon dried active yeast
  • 300 g (11 oz) strong white flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 25 g (1 oz) butter

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 medium egg, beaten
  • 150 ml water - or by weight instead of volume, 150 g water

Method

  1. Add all of the ingredients to your breadmaker and set to a long (2.5 hour) dough program
  2. Knead lightly and roll out to 6 mm (1/4") thick
  3. Cut out 8 cm (3") discs
  4. Cover with a damp cloth and leave in a warm place until doubled in size
  5. Bake at 320° C (450° F - gas 8) for 10 minutes
  6. The muffins should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom with a knife

Serving suggestions

Toast lightly, butter and serve immediately
